Sound the alarm. Cruz Azul’s winless streak is, at long last, over.
The two Ecuadorians in Cruz Azul’s squad each tallied a goal as La Maquina produced a 2-0 victory over Jaguares de Chiapas in Liga MX and ended a seven-game winless streak Saturday.
Not since the first week of January, when Cruz Azul defeated Club Necaxa 1-0, had Paco Jemez’s side registered a victory. Since then, supporters of the club from Mexico’s capital have been forced to watch their team throw away points carelessly, committing defensive errors that counteract an otherwise dominant performance.
But, against Chiapas, there were no slipups from Cruz Azul, which opened the scoring in the 66th minute when Angel Mena let the ball fly from just under 30 yards out.
Mena’s compatriot, Joao Rojas, doubled Cruz Azul’s lead one minute later by chipping Moises Munoz from the edge of the Mexican ‘keeper’s penalty area.
Nobody will welcome Cruz Azul’s triumph more than Jemez, who is under fire after La Maquina’s malfunctions throughout January and February.
