The oldest rivalry in Mexican football was renewed Saturday night, and the battle proved Club Atlas can indeed lose on home soil.
In another edition of El Clasico Tapatio, Atlas fell 2-1 to Chivas, bringing its 12-game unbeaten run at Estadio Jalisco to an abrupt end. El Rebano Sagrado dominated the Liga MX match, and its two goals were produced during a first-half assault. Angel Zaldivar converted a 31st-minute penalty kick and Orbelin Pineda took advantage of a suicidal giveaway by Oscar Ustari less than 10 minutes later.
Atlas entered the derby with six victories and six draws in its last 12 Liga MX games at Estadio Jalisco, while Chivas hadn’t lost on the road since September, when El Rebano Sagrado was defeated at Toluca. Barring a draw, one streak had to come to an end, and Matias Almeyda’s side produced its best performance of the season to keep its run going.
El Clasico Tapatio boasts more than 100 years of history and is the oldest and most organic rivalry in Mexico, as ESPN FC’s Tom Marshall explains. Atlas is associated with wealth and local support, while Chivas is affiliated with the working class and national fandom.
