3 players Borussia Dortmund should try to sign in January transfer window

Here are three players Borussia Dortmund should look to sign during the January transfer window.

Hatem Ben Arfa (Paris Saint-Germain)

Although Thomas Tuchel insisted he’s happy with his current squad, there’s still plenty of room for improvement after Borussia Dortmund’s somewhat lackluster first-half of the season.

A versatile player such as Ben Arfa of Paris Saint-Germain could be a valuable addition to a Dortmund side that’s a few injuries away from possibly slipping further down the table, and out of a European position.

Whether he’s helping out in attack or wreaking havoc up the middle and on the wing, Ben Arfa offers an array of skills that will make him an attractive option.

After being linked to the gifted 29-year-old ahead of last season’s January transfer window, Dortmund may be lining up another push in light of Ben Arfa’s struggles to break into PSG’s lineup this season.

Jose Gimenez (Atletico Madrid)

Defensive reinforcements are a necessary area of improvement that Dortmund will likely address over the next month

While it hasn’t quite been dire at the back without Mats Hummels – who departed for Bayern Munich last summer – Dortmund’s defence, with the exception of Matthias Ginter, is short on prospects who can tow the line for years to come.

Gimenez, 21, could be the answer as the Uruguayan international has all the makings of evolving into a star centre-back.

Despite his struggles this season to prove he’s worthy of a starting place in Atletico’s defensive scheme, the 21-year-old certainly won’t come cheap if Atletico elects to sell Gimenez in January.

Regardless of Gimenez’s situation, Atletico may demand a fee well north of €30 million, which could prove to be too rich for Dortmund at this stage in the season.

Mahmoud Dahoud (Borussia Monchengladbach)

The vultures will begin to circle in the coming days and weeks in a bid pluck away Borussia Monchengladbach’s underachieving stars following the team’s miserable first half.

Gladbach will undoubtedly prefer to keep the squad intact, and concentrate on making additions in an effort to climb back into the top half of the league table.

Yet, a substantial offer could persuade Die Fohlen to offload some players.

Dortmund’s main target this month may be Dahoud after the Syrian-born player’s instrumental performances in the heart of Gladbach’s midfield last season. Although he’s taken a step back this term – only appearing in 10 of the opening 18 games – Dahoud’s value likely hasn’t been impacted in Gladbach’s estimation.

The creative playmaker may not find a place in Dortmund’s first team right away, but Dahoud’s inclusion would offer a solid upgrade to the team’s depth chart as Tuchel’s men push for a place in the Champions League.
